Over 1 billion people in the world live with one form of disability or the other.
Most of the global population with disabilities live in underdeveloped countries. They are forced to live a life of exclusion and neglect due to discrimination, lack of support, & accessibility to resources. They are forced to depend on society, with insufficient rehabilitation or vocational training services.
Although certain health services exist for individuals with disabilities in developing nations, they are not widely accessible due to many barriers.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also explicitly include disability and persons with disabilities 11 times, related to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, and data collection and monitoring.
Article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) affirms the right of persons with disabilities to attain the highest standard of healthcare without discrimination. However, the reality is that very few countries provide adequate quality services for people with disabilities.
Unicef Convention on the Rights of Child addresses universal concerns, and Vision Healthcare Foundation wants to contribute positively.
The right to health for all was stated in the World Health Organization1 (WHO) Constitution in 1946 and enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights2 (UDHR) in 1948. It was reaffirmed in the Alma Ata Declaration in 1978 and stated as an inalienable right in the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) in 2006. The most recent global commitment comes from the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in its Goal 3 on Health, underpinned by Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The United Nations recently released its ‘Disability and Development Report - Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals by, for and with persons with disabilities, 2018’3.
Some of the issues highlighted in the report and relevant to disability and health include the following:
Compared to persons without disabilities, persons with disabilities are more likely to have poor health: among 43 countries, 42% of persons with disabilities versus 6% of persons without disabilities perceive their health as poor.
Access to healthcare services remains a challenge for persons with disabilities, who are more than three times as likely to be unable to get healthcare when needed. Access to rehabilitation services is also a challenge. In some countries, more than 50% of persons with disabilities have an unmet need for these services.
To become a leading organization facilitating persons with disabilities comprehensively, leaving no one behind.
Build and manage a Comprehensive Disability Management Center where Persons with Disabilities shall be assisted in overcoming barriers to integrate with society as productive members.
